This initiative was set in motion by the founder of Pensole Design Academy Dr. D’Wayne Edwards, and plans to reestablish what was Michigan’s only HBCU as part of a $500 million investment to the city of Detroit from The Gilbert Foundation. With a $50 loan, a determined young Lewis bought several used typewriters, and started the Lewis Business College, at one point even running it out of her home. While other HBCUs may offer some design degrees, PLC will be the only HBCU to focus on design.
